“FIT FOR 55”, ambitious objectives for Europeans
As part of the Green Deal for Europe, the European Commission presented, on July 14, 2021, its new climate action plan called “Fit for 55”. It aims to strengthen energy efficiency and renewable energies . This program contains a set of concrete measures to accelerate the fight against climate change: it must achieve climate neutrality in 2050. It aims to reduce net European greenhouse gas emissions by 55% compared to 1990 figures. of carbon by 2030.
The Action Plan to combat energy poverty
The project is ambitious with 12 proposed regulations and directives . They concern all sectors of the economy: industry, transport but also agriculture and forestry.
All “ these proposals will be discussed for several months before they come to fruition ” (Barbara Pompili, July 15, 2021 on RMC).
In fact, this provision has been extended to the transport and construction sector. And the French government is worried about the repercussions on households and small businesses.
But there are also reasons to rejoice: the European Commission is taking up a certain number of French priorities such as the carbon border adjustment mechanism .
Some figures to better understand the challenges of “Fit for 55”
The new Social Climate Fund has an envelope of 72.2 billion for 7 years . These funds are dedicated to the renovation of buildings and the transition to clean mobility. The groups particularly targeted by this system are households who do not have the financial means to choose the most sustainable solutions.
35 million buildings will be renovated, generating 160,000 green jobs for 10 years.
The share of renewable energies in the energy mix must reach 40% in 2030 , instead of the current target of 32%.
The European Union is betting on bringing the rest of the world into this virtuous circle and in particular in the perspective of COP 26.
